Okonomimura
"Hiroshima style Okonomiyaki" (Japanese pancake)
was born in Hiroshima and has been favored widely as the taste of the locals.
Its unique thick sauce stimulates appetite and today, it is known throughout
the nation as one of the dishes which represents the tastes of Hiroshima
along with Hiroshima oysters.
Okonomiyaki which has ingredients including a heap of chopped cabbage,
meat, eggs, noodles (or udon noodles), looks very heavy and filling. Many
women say "Oh, I could nevereat this much", when they see the
pancake, but most of the times, everybody finishes their food and there
is no leftover.
The place, where people can readily enjoy this "Hiroshima
style Okonomiyaki" is "Okonomimura" which is located in
the busy downtown of Hiroshima ,Shintenchi. Although today's Okonomimura
has an outside of a modern stylish building since it was rebuilt in 1992,
once entering inside, its atmosphere is definitely that of a food stand
meeting place itself. On the 3rd and 4th floors, 28 stores put up their
colorful traditional Japanese shop curtains and during lunch and dinner
hours, every store is lively with many diners. Typical dishes are "Nikutama-soba"
with pork, eggs and noodles, or "Nikutama-udon" with udon noodles,
however, other types of Okonomiyaki with such ingredients as ikaten (fried
squids), fresh squids, octopuses, oysters, and shrimps are also popular.
Since every store is trying to create their own unique Okonomiyaki, taste
is slightly different at every store, however, prices are all identical,
so there is no need to worry.
